What are the factors that influence price on colored gemstones?

The factor that will most affect the value of the stone is color. Because gem color descriptions are so varied and subject to individual perception, GIA developed the Colored Stone Grading System. It helps judge a stone’s color from the most preferred to the least preferred available for its specific species.

About the stone

DIAMOND

Diamond forms under high temperature and pressure conditions that exist only about 100 miles beneath earth's surface. The 4Cs created by GIA are considered the global language of diamond quality. The most important characteristic is the diamond’s "cut" or its symmetry, followed by color and clarity, depending on the stone’s shape.

EMERALD

Emerald is the bluish - green variety of beryl, which includes morganites and aquamarines. In emeralds, expect to see inclusions that dealers like to call "jardín" or garden. The most coveted emeralds come from Colombia and they display bluish green to pure green hues with vivid color saturations.

RUBY

Ruby is the most valuable variety of the "corundum" mineral species. They can command the highest price-per-carat price of any colored stone, especially if their color is categorized as "pigeon blood". Fine rubies glow with intense red in sunlight due to red fluorescence that helps intensify the color.

SAPPHIRE

It is not commonly known that besides blue sapphire and ruby, the corundum family also includes  “fancy sapphires.” These sapphires come in a variety of hues such as - violet, green, yellow, orange, pink and purple.
